This year, the North Rhine-Westphalia police are once again taking part in the European Road Safety Week. From September 16 to 22, 2024, the police will be carrying out special checks. In addition to aggressive behavior in road traffic, the North Rhine-Westphalia police will be paying particular attention to motorcyclists this week. The number of motorcycle accidents in North Rhine-Westphalia has risen recently. This year, 57 motorcyclists have already died on North Rhine-Westphalian roads. That is as many as in the whole of last year 2023. 2,256 people had motorcycle accidents in total. In the previous year, the police counted 2,904 cases in which people had an accident on a motorized two-wheeler. In most cases, excessive speed was the cause of the traffic accident.
Interior Minister Herbert Reul: "This development is alarming. Every road death is one too many. Behind every fatality
there are individual fates and relatives who have to cope with the loss of a loved one. The vast majority of these terrible accidents can
be avoided with consideration and caution. Drive consciously and stick to the guidelines. Expect others to make mistakes. If you drive aggressively, you lose. Nobody has to thunder across the asphalt with a lead foot."
The police confront road users with the consequences of accidents during checks. This often has a lasting effect on those affected, and motorcyclists themselves can also contribute to road safety by participating more consciously in road traffic. Minister Herbert Reul continued: "The police do not want to take away anyone's enjoyment of motorcycling. But all road users want to arrive at their destination in good health. That is why we are focusing on raising awareness."
