New technology finds its way into police work
Modern 3D scanner improves accident investigation

On Tuesday, 28.07.2020, district administrator and head of the district police authority, Hans-Jürgen Petrauschke, presented the new technology of the Central Traffic Accident Investigation Team. Interested media representatives were shown the functions and images of the new 3D laser scanner.
"The police are expected to treat accident scenes like crime scenes and secure all important traces," said the head of the authority during the press conference. Increasing the quality of work and the efficiency of police work were the focus of the purchase of the scanner. The device, worth around 80,000 euros, is used by the Central Traffic Accident Investigation Team in the event of serious accidents and was procured by the State Office for Central Police Services (LZPD NRW).
In the event of a trial, the course of the accident can be reconstructed in the courtroom as accurately and clearly as possible for the parties involved in the proceedings. It is also expected that accident scenes can be cleared more quickly and thus reopened to moving traffic more quickly.
The police in the Rhine district of Neuss is one of three district authorities to have this modern technology. To date, there are a total of eleven police authorities that use laser technology to record accidents.
